Reviewed by Den19 (2012-04-15) Mac mini 2.3GHz + Acer 21.5inMy first Mac. Came to it from 10+ years using Linux PCs (so I may not have a typical perspective). I had always thought of Macs as overpriced and/or underpowered but having nice software and underneath the glitter being basically a Unix box. So this time seeing the price of the Mini when it was time to upgrade I thought I'd give it a try.
I got the $681 combo with the 21.5in Acer monitor and a MacAlly keyboard and mouse for $20. I also ordered 8GBytes from Crucial for about $55, so the complete system was $756 (later added a Macally camera for Skype and Facetime for another $25 or so). A competitive price for the system (not cheap but competitive).
I have had it for a few weeks now and use it for email, web, writing, organizing photos, minor editing of home movies and some computationally intensive tasks and graphics for work (computer simulations and plotting). All the Gnu programs I used are available in Macports. I find performance quite acceptable for what I do including 3D graphics under X (and much faster than my previous machine). I found some things about OS X annoying but changing preferences, getting a few public domain programs from the web like KeyRemap4Macbook, and time have taken care of nearly all my issues.
Of course, in addition to the annoyances there are many nice features to OS X. Coming from Linux the way OS X finds and handles drivers is a joy. The hardware quality is excellent. The only downside is the relatively slow disk but that hasn't been a problem for me. All in all I have been extremely pleased with my purchase and have bought 2 more; one for my wife and one for my office at work. My use and needs are not typical but for what I do this is a very good, cost effective machine.

Reviewed by Jonathan Silverman (2012-02-07) Mac mini: Great price and performanceNeed a computer real quick, and cheap, after our three-year-old PC died. I gambled on this Mac mini because 1) I have always been fascinated with Apple computers and how much different and supposedly intuitive they are. 2) Also, it comes with free a FedEx overnight and is nicely discounted, not much, but enough considering the retail price of the Mac mini.
I got my purchase as expected. The customer service rep promptly processed my order and after two days there the Mac mini was at our door. Coming from a Windows machine, I was surprised and impressed with the “ready out of the box” status of the computer. Whereas in our old PC I remember installing a bunch of software before I could get rolling, here on a mini I just plugged it on and I was ready to attend to my emails and work stuff.
As for the performance, the Mac mini is overperforming itself, in my opinion. For its size, the mini is very capable. It is actually remarkable how a computer this small can perform any everyday computing tasks very well. This is highly recommended if you are looking for a home computer that is cheap and easy to use. |

Reviewed by Erica Carlisle (2012-02-01) Great buy on special Mac mini dealBeen intrigued with the refreshed Mac mini since its debut. So when I saw a special from MacMall, I grabbed one. Once I got the mini, I was impressed with the power and performance of this little desktop. It looks underpowered from the outside. It is small and has no ODD. But it will surprise you of what it can do. The Mac mini is the perfect home computer. It is not expensive, but still up to the task. It does all my every day computing needs okay. I hooked it up with our 1-year-old HD monitor via DVI and I have not in any way felt it underpowered. It works great. It felt like I was using a $1000 computer. I could open spreadsheets side by side with a Web browser and iTunes and the machine is capable. I must add that, maybe 2 months from now, I may end up with a MacBook Air that the office will give us as service laptop. By that time I guess I would be using the Air more often than the mini. Which means that my kids would be enjoying this Mac mini as well. |
